Parents' Page A good read on peer influence on your teen's brain/behaviors
http://ww2.kqed.org/mindshift/2015/03/12/whats-an-adolescent-brains-weakness-other-tweens/ The Brain with David Eagleman http://www.pbs.org/about/blogs/news/pbs-announces-new-series-the-brain-with-dr-david-eagleman/ David Eagleman has written many fascinating books about neuroscience. I recently read "Incognito" and highly recommend it! If you have TiVo, I'd recommend recording this show (airs tonight!) on PBS to watch with your psych student. I know I'll be watching it. There will be an opportunity for Extra Credit through the program "The Brain." Details are TBD, here is the link to episode 1. I highly recommend you give it a watch too! http://video.pbs.org/video/2365580655/ CURRICULUM NIGHT- Thursday, September 10th 6:30-8:35. I look forward to meeting you all then! This page should serve as a tool to enrich your understanding of our units, topics of discussion in psychology. I will post videos, articles and anything I find interesting that may be worthy of your time. Although we are studying many units in psychology, one of the most fascinating things to study that beautiful human being living with you: the teenager. I find it fascinating and will often post things with regard to that more than any specific unit of study! Should you have any specific questions for me, please return to the home page to find the most convenient way to contact me. Additionally, thank you for getting involved in your child's AP Psychology experience!! Your student will benefit from your support as they take on this challenge of an AP course. Our shared goal is the successful completion of the AP Examination in the spring!
Please be mindful of a few things: 1. This is a year-long course that meets every other day in school. However, in order for students to be successful on the exam and in the course, they will be expected to work with the content even on the days their class does not meet. If students are keeping up with their studies, they should expect to spend ~ 1 hour per night on AP Psychology. If not, it could be a long night before the exam! 2. This course has been reviewed and approved as college-level. It will be challenging. Students will need to be motivated to complete outside readings and assignments that cover key content. Students not spending time outside of class working will quickly find themselves falling behind. Check in on your child's progress and support them in their efforts. Ask them what they are studying in class and be interested in their assignments. Encourage homework be completed in a quiet, tech free environment. Help them create and stick to a homework and study calendar. Although an AP course places additional demands upon students, do not allow assignments and study time to negatively impact your child’s sleep schedule or emotional well-being. There will be an adjustment period for many of the students. Feel free to contact me with concerns, but please do not panic! 3. Please familiarize yourself with the tentative course calendar. The course calendar has been carefully crafted to maximize our time in class and cover all 14 units of study before the AP Exam in May. However, assemblies, testing, and weather events will interrupt our schedule periodically. We will make changes to calendar dates as necessary, but will largely follow the progression of lesson titles and assignments as listed on the calendar. 4. Please read the course outline on the syllabus. Familiarize yourself with the late work policy, technology policy, and integrity expectations. All have been crafted with your child's best interests in mind. We have the shared goal of student success! 5. In an attempt to lessen my environmental footprint, I copy and distribute class materials in limited numbers. The website is where students can access and download the majority of their homework, prep work, and other materials. 6. I believe that it is vital for students to take responsibility for their own learning, to celebrate their successes, and to learn from their stumbles. This course is structured to work on all these areas. Students may find it difficult to manage the responsibility that comes with an AP course; I encourage you to be the "guide on their side," and help them advocate for themselves if problems arise. 7. The AP Psychology Examination will be held here at Liberty High School on Monday, May 2, 2016, at 12:00. I sincerely hope that, after putting in a year-long effort in an AP course, students would attempt to take the Exam. I am happy to help encourage your reluctant testers! Any questions you have regarding the AP program should be directed to our AP site coordinator, John Gardiner. More information will be provided as we get into second semester.
